Fred Gough Singles Matchplay Final
14th Aug 2019
Winner - Tony Cooper
Tony Cooper was awarded the Fred Gough Seniors Shield (matchplay knock-out) following the failure of several players to meet the pre-determined 'Play By' dates. By failing to meet the due dates those players were disqualified but, as Tony had conformed fully with all the Competition rules and procedures throughout the early stages, The Committee agreed that he should not be punished for other players' failings. Maybe not the best way to get on to the Honours Boards for the first time but after finding himself as 'last man standing' Cooper effectively won the Trophy by a 'walk over'; quite right too! In Round 1 Cooper had an impressive 5&4 win over Pat O'Mahony and then did battle with Rob Griffiths in Round 2. Griffiths took it right to the wire but Cooper walked in as 1 up winner and was through to the semi-finals - what happened next you already know (above). Well done Tony - first Trophy, first Honours Board entry - I'm sure it won't be your last either.
Rather than brush this one under the carpet The Committee felt that the unfortunate turn-of-events should be broadcast to the Membership for absolute transparency; what happened in the Fred Gough Competition highlights the need to conform with the 'play by' dates in these knock-out competitions. Exceptions cannot be made! There is always plenty of time allowed to arrange and play each round. Players must make themselves fully aware of the T's & C's when entering these 'self-administered' competitions - once the competition is in progress all participating players MUST adhere to the Competition Rules. IF IN DOUBT, ASK!
