In order to better benefit the chosen Charity the Ladies Charity Shield was actually contested by Ravenmeadow & Perdiswell Park Members across genders and ages; it was, in fact, ‘open to all’ Members. Luckily, the event was played out under fairly favourable conditions; although rain threatened to spoil things for the early starters, the rain clouds passed through and into the distance well before the first group teed off and the morning remained quite pleasant with just a few swirling cross winds to cause occasional consternation. Twenty-four handicapper Phil Godwin shot a really well-worked 41 stableford points to win the trophy by 3 clear points and earn himself a handicap reduction, down to twenty-two, into the bargain. Although Godwin only managed to down four pars in his round he scored persistently well, scored on every hole and only really dropped any shots on the tenth hole when his only 1 point finish went on his card. Using his handicap to great advantage, even five double bogies didn’t prove too painful! Godwin could easily have brought in another 6 points withour breaking into much of a sweat. Andy Wood, playing off twenty, took second place after posting a tied 38 points. Countback found in Wood’s favour thanks to a well crafted 20 points on the back nine holes. Wood carded a birdie on the fourteenth and four pars but four double bogies and a hurtful triple, on the fourth, together with having to concede four shots to Godwin, left him well short at the close of play. Jared Langham lost out to Wood in the card play-off after he also posted 38 points; a disappointing 15 points on the back nine handed the higher place to Wood and left Langham rueing his many dropped shots. The seventeen handicapper had to be content, although probably very ‘narked’ with himself, with third place overall. Opening his account with a birdie on the first hole, Langham went on to add seven pars to his card. Unluckily, Langham also carded four double bogies and failed to score at all on the twelfth. Eighteen handicapper Steve Price also had to call on countback to award him his podium place; finishing tied on 36 points, Price carded seven pars but he too left far too many shots, and points, out on the course when he succumbed to three double bogies and failed to card points on two other holes. Stephen Griffiths lost out to Price in the card play-off and finished fifth; Griffiths’ 17 points on the back nine was no match for Price’s 19 points.
