Although the Par / Bogey competition format is not one of the most popular throughout the golfing season, the Seniors’ Par Plate was still contested with great spirit in tough winter conditions that restricted scoring abilities for all concerned on the day. As it transpired, the podium finishers all returned rather low scores when compared to historical data with the winner ‘sitting pretty’ with just +1 returned! Even then, two players finished tied on +1 and countback was required to separate them and award final finishing places; ‘Chatty Man’ eighteen handicapper Joe Jackson eventually took the win courtesy of a much better back nine hole score of +4 (following a pretty shocking front nine!) and will go down in Ravenmeadow Club history with his name engraved forever on the trophy and on the Honours Boards. A happy ‘Chatty Man’ remained in the Clubhouse up to and way past the closure of the competition which confirmed his victory. As already ‘hinted’ at, Jackson’s outward performance amounted to ‘nothing to write home about’ having found just two holes in regulation and also erring all too frequently with four double bogies and a triple, on the seventh. However, after the turn Jackson’s fortunes took a turn for the better and he went on to card another four pars and a birdie (on the sixteenth). Just one double bogey coming in wasn’t too detrimental in the broader scheme of things but it did leave him still in the uncertain hands of a card play-off which found in his favour by a good margin. Fifteen handicapper John Wilkinson also posted +1 but lost out to Jackson when his back nine score of +1 failed to match the eventual winner’s excellent inward tally. Wilkinson’s front nine score was massively better than his tied contemporary, having carded three bogies and just two doubles. What Wilkinson failed to do was carry that form onto the back nine where he carded a birdie on the fourteenth and three more pars but also two more double bogies. As Jackson upped the ante, Wilkinson’s challenge began to ebb away and left him only able to claim that lowly +1 on the homeward stretch. Twenty-five handicapper John Stonham played his way onto the podium, finally taking third place, with a respectable zero points tally. Stonham also had to call on countback as his par for the course score was matched by another three players but he got over the line ahead of his immediate challengers thanks to having carded +3 on his last 9 hole run for home. Stonham was glad of his multiple shots-in-hand to help him out though having carded just two pars in his round (both on the back nine). Four double bogies and three triple threatened to thwart his chances but a strong homeward session took him out of reach and the third podium step was easily his. Fifteen handicapper Roger Savage fell short of Stonham in the countback when he could only amass +2 on the way in. A birdie on the fourteenth and six pars looked pretty tidy. Three double bogies were costly but not as costly as the triple bogey on the ninth and a quadruple on the seventh. Then, having to concede a shed-load of shots to Stonham his day was disappointingly over and fourth place was the best he could claim. Also finishing in the four-way tie for the final podium place were Pat O’Mahony and Tim Delaney who finished fifth and sixth respectively.
